{"id":46950,"date":"2017-12-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/skolnicklaw.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/nursing-assistant-sentenced-questions-remain-about-victims\/"},"modified":"2023-07-10T07:52:40","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T07:52:40","slug":"nursing-assistant-sentenced-questions-remain-about-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/skolnicklaw.com\/nursing-assistant-sentenced-questions-remain-about-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Nursing assistant sentenced, questions remain about victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former nursing assistant at an Ohio nursing home was handed an 18-month prison sentence and will be placed on the sex offender registry for 15 years \u2014 the maximum possible sentence he could receive for groping a nurse and masturbating on her as a first-time offender.<\/p>\n<p>However, questions remain about whether or not he\u2019s truly a first-time offender \u2014 especially since information has surfaced that he\u2019d been transferred from a previous position after allegedly touching another employee inappropriately.<\/p>\n<p>The judge openly questioned whether or not this was really the defendant\u2019s first offense or whether it was merely the first time he was caught and prosecuted. She pointed out that he\u2019d been trusted to care for many elderly patients \u2014 including women who are unable to resist or possibly unable to even tell anyone what had been done to them.<\/p>\n<p>The nursing home has stated that he passed their background check \u2014 however, the defendant showed no remorse for his actions and described what he did as merely \u201chugging\u201d and \u201cwetting himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, recent investigations have brought to light the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2017\/02\/health\/nursing-home-sex-abuse-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sexual assault<\/a> occurs with terrifying regularity in nursing homes around the country \u2014 and much of it goes unreported.<\/p>\n<p>How can you tell if your loved one is the victim of sexual assault inside a nursing home? Look for these tell-tale signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unexplained bruises around his or her genitals, thighs or anal area<\/li>\n<li>Sudden changes in behavior, including fearfulness or crying<\/li>\n<li>Signs of a venereal disease that was never previously diagnosed<\/li>\n<li>Statements from the senior about being touched or raped, even if he or she has dementia \u2014 especially if the statements are new and unlike anything ever said before<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you suspect that your loved one is a victim of <a href=\"\/practice-areas\/nursing-home-neglect-and-abuse\/\">sexual abuse while in a nursing home<\/a>, seek help immediately.
