Homeowner Liability for Winter Slip-and-Fall Injuries

News   August 18, 2025

As explained in House Digest’s article “Are Homeowners Responsible For Injuries Due To Not Shoveling Snow Or Ice?” by writer Kristin Park, legal liability for winter-related slip-and-fall injuries varies by state, and homeowners should be aware of the laws that apply to them—especially in snowy regions like Ohio. Legal expert Danny Karon, a law professor at both the University of Michigan and The Ohio State University, shared valuable insights on this topic.

According to Karon, most Midwestern and Northeastern states—including Ohio—do not hold property owners liable for injuries caused by “natural accumulations” of snow and ice. The Ohio Supreme Court has reaffirmed this, ruling that winter weather presents inherent risks that residents are expected to navigate.
