How Ohio’s New OVI Law Impacts Penalties and Testing

News   October 9, 2025

As reported by WKBN in their news “Ohio Cracking Down on OVI Penalties”, a new law known as Liv’s Law (House Bill 37) has gone into effect, significantly increasing the consequences for OVI offenses. Fines are now higher by hundreds of dollars, and the maximum penalty for aggravated vehicular homicide has been raised to 20 years in prison.

The law also introduces oral fluid testing for drug-related OVI enforcement, aimed at improving detection after marijuana legalization. While it may take time for law enforcement to implement new testing kits, the law sends a strong message about the dangers of impaired driving.
