New Law Targets Repeat Drunk Drivers in Ohio

News   September 29, 2025

As reported by 10TV News in the article “Parents’ fight for justice honored: Ohio enacts ‘Liv’s Law’ targeting repeat OVI offenders,” Ohio has taken a major step toward combating repeat drunk driving offenses with the passage of House Bill 37, now officially known as Liv’s Law. The bill, signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine, goes into effect on April 9 and introduces stricter penalties for aggravated vehicular homicide cases involving operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).

The law is named in memory of Olivia “Liv” Wright, a 22-year-old Ohio University Chillicothe student who was tragically killed by a drunk driver in September 2020. The driver had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit. Following a five-year sentence handed down to the offender, Liv’s parents, Bryan and Teresa Wright, transformed their grief into a relentless legislative campaign to strengthen Ohio’s drunk driving laws.
