Ohio Considers Criminal Penalties for Car Crash Injuries
As reported by WCPO Cincinnati in the article “Ohio bill would add criminal charges for auto crashes causing injury,” a new proposal in the Ohio House could drastically reshape how traffic-related injuries are prosecuted. House Bill 653 aims to make it a criminal offense to cause serious physical harm to another person as a result of even minor traffic infractions.
Currently, Ohio law limits vehicular assault charges to serious cases like drunk driving, reckless driving, or violations in construction zones. However, if passed, HB 653 would extend criminal liability to drivers involved in accidents caused by common violations such as speeding, failing to yield, or running a red light—if those actions result in serious injury.
