Ohio Driving Without Insurance: Fines & Legal Consequences

As explained by Bankrate in their article, “The Penalties for Driving Without Insurance in Ohio,”, Ohio drivers are required by law to carry minimum auto insurance coverage, and failure to do so can result in serious financial and legal consequences.
Ohio’s Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements:
Drivers must carry at least:
- $25,000 per person in bodily injury liability
- $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability
- $25,000 per accident in property damage liability
- Uninsured motorist coverage must be offered but can be declined in writing.
However, minimum coverage may not be enough—many new cars cost far more than the state-mandated limits, leaving at-fault drivers personally liable for excess damages.
