Ohio’s Move Over Law Expansion: What Drivers Need to Know

News   February 24, 2025

As reported by The U.S. Sun in their article, “Drivers Could Face Hundreds in Extra Fines if They Don’t Move Away from ‘Hazard’ Vehicles Under ‘New Law,’”, Ohio lawmakers are working to expand the state’s Move Over Law to protect more vehicles stopped on the roadside. The new bipartisan Senate Bill 16 would require drivers to change lanes or slow down for any vehicle in distress, signaled by hazard lights, red lights, or flares.

Currently, Ohio law mandates that drivers move over or reduce speed only for emergency vehicles such as police, ambulances, and tow trucks. However, State Senator Kent Smith (D-Euclid) aims to broaden these protections after numerous roadside crashes have involved both emergency responders and stranded motorists.
