When Emergency Vehicles Cause Harm: Know Your Rights
As reported by News 5 Cleveland in the investigative piece “OH emergency vehicles at fault for thousands of crashes causing injuries, even death; immunity laws questioned,” thousands of Ohioans have suffered life-altering injuries from crashes caused by emergency vehicles—yet many find themselves unable to seek justice or compensation due to the state’s government immunity laws.
One such case is Harold Hill, a Rittman resident whose life was upended in November 2022. Hill was stopped on Route 83 when a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy crashed into him from behind. The impact broke his back, ribs, neck, and punctured his lung. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the deputy was at fault and received only a written warning.
