Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability Benefits?

As outlined by the Social Security Administration in their article, “Understanding Social Security Disability Benefits,” many workers underestimate the likelihood of becoming disabled. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age.
Social Security Disability Programs:
The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through two programs:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) – For individuals who have worked and paid Social Security taxes, but are unable to work due to a long-term or permanent disability.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – A needs-based program for low-income individuals who have limited work history and are disabled, blind, or aged 65 and older.
